Supporting community engagement, guiding participation in social and daily activities

At BERNAMINS HEALTHCARE SERVICES LLC, Community Integration and Participation services support individuals with developmental disabilities in becoming more involved in everyday activities outside the home. This service is provided in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, helping children, adolescents, and adults engage with their local community in ways that match their interests, comfort level, and personal goals.

Support is focused on practical, real-world participation—whether that means attending local activities, running errands, or building social connections—while ensuring individuals feel safe and supported throughout the process.

What This Service Includes

Our staff works alongside individuals to identify opportunities and provide guidance during community-based activities. This may include:

  • Exploring local activities and community resources
Identifying events, programs, and places such as parks, libraries, and recreational centers that align with the individual’s interests.
  • Supporting participation in social and recreational activities
Assisting individuals in attending gatherings, hobbies, or group activities in a way that feels comfortable and manageable.
  • Encouraging involvement in volunteer or structured programs
Helping individuals take part in community-based opportunities that promote routine and purpose.
  • Building social connections and relationships
Supporting interactions with peers and community members to develop familiarity and comfort in social settings.
  • Providing guidance during outings and public interactions
Assisting with navigation, decision-making, and appropriate engagement in different environments.

These supports are adapted based on the individual’s experience level and gradually adjusted as confidence grows.

What to Expect

Services typically begin with identifying the individual’s interests, current level of community involvement, and any challenges they may face outside the home. From there, the staff introduces activities step by step, providing support during outings and helping the individual become more familiar with different environments.

Over time, support may shift from direct assistance to more observational guidance as the individual becomes more comfortable. Families can expect communication about participation, progress, and any areas where additional support may be needed. Adjustments are made based on how the individual responds to different activities and environments.

Supporting Everyday Community Engagement

Community participation is developed gradually through repeated, supported experiences. With consistent guidance, individuals can become more comfortable navigating their surroundings, interacting with others, and taking part in activities that are part of daily life in their community.
